Case Studies & Research

For decades, the accepted industry practice has been to state a building's energy use based on estimated performance (typically through modeling).  Recent studies, largely spearheaded by NBI, have shown that building performance varies widely from estimates, even for the most advanced buildings.

If the building industry is ever to achieve the deep energy savings required to drastically curb greenhouse gas emissions, owners and operators MUST have access to data that tells them where their building falls short of expected or target performance and identifies strategies that are working.

NBI has compiled several informational products to help disseminate the lessons of measured performance studies.

Measured Performance Case Studies

These case studies focus on individual buildings and demonstrate actual results of various measures and process approaches.  Read more

Research Reports

NBI staff also analyze aggregate building performance data that is summarized in Research Reports. This combined analysis of hundreds of high performing buildings identifies trends and cross-cutting lessons of use to designers, operators, and policymakers. Read more
